Kate HENDRICKSON

In 2016, after a career working in galleries and as an established private art dealer, Kate Hendrickson returned to the love for drawing she had discovered in childhood and developed in her MFA at the University of Denver.  Recognizing a “need to actually create art had become so intense that I could no longer deny it”, Hendrickson started drawing again. And in the past 8 years her art has evolved manifold times.

The first body of work coming out of her hands, was a group of contemplative black and white drawings of seashells, composted of sedimentary layers of graphite. The sinuous lines she prized, soon became abstracted to the point of becoming evocative. Color was introduced in her next group of drawings, heavy with pastels, adding elements suggestive of nature and landscape, and anchored by whorls of smokey, echoing energy. These past few years Kate Hendrickson took this compositional strength to first hide, and then reveal Hebrew letters as a ways of connecting more deeply with her faith and identity.

Aside from the studio, Kate's happy place is on a bike. An avid cycler, a couple of years ago she started jotting down compositional elements of bikes: frames, bullhorn handlebars, derailleurs, wheels… For the past year or so Hendrickson has taken these compositions on a real artistic ride. The resulting drawings are fun and elegant, and they convey a "pop" quality that still shows her hand in the color pencil marks as they interact with the grain of the paper. Hey bikers: how about riding one of these beautiful drawings home?
