Kate HENDRICKSON

In 2016, after a career working in galleries and as an established private art dealer, Kate Hendrickson returned to the love for drawing she had discovered in childhood and developed in her MFA at the University of Denver.  Recognizing a “need to actually create art had become so intense that I could no longer deny it”, Hendrickson started drawing again; just like that.

Contemplative black and white drawings of shells were the first steps in a drawing process that keeps evolving, much like her drawings themselves.  Working in color or monochromatically, sinuous and sensual lines seem to settle like sediment into texture.  Whether approaching full saturation, or leaving the paper blank, Hendrickson’s compositions suggest their inspiration, while rendering scales of light that go from bright to dark.  Her drawings do no so much represent what she sees, as evoke it.  In her compositions one can envision the artist looking out over Lake Michigan or the Florida coast, or one can travel to another horizon of one’s own choosing.
