"DETAILS EXHIBIT" NOTE:
Dave Lefner is a perfectionist who understands that the soul of his art resides in large part in the slight imperfections he affords.  The same attraction many of us have for any antique is what Lefner infuses into his work.  He chooses a perfect vantage point; one that gives his composition a dynamic feeling.  He also outlines the shapes with elegance and balance.  Then, Lefner lets his craft take over.  Rather than work in a technique that could provide photographic perfection, Lefner has chosen to work in linoleum reduction.  In this technique, execution and printing always retain some level of serendipity (click here for more details on that).  The layers of ink, applied one on top of the other, afford for subjacent colors to show through some solid color masses.  In Gold Room the darkest grays do let some beige-gold shimmer through.  And while Lefner is a master at carving and lining up colors to perfection, the slightest irregularities will be left in the lines of color demarcation.  Much like the charm of vintage signs resides in their age and flaws, Lefner allows a few irregularities to creep into his exacting craft, so adding to their overall appeal.  While his compositions are meant to be powerful from afar, they waste nothing of that strength as one moves in to discover his saturated colors and graceful lines.
