Winter Night

Linocut printed in white ink as an intaglio on black wove paper.
Edition of 20.
Signed, titled, dated & numbered in pencil.

This is a particularly unusual technique. The composition is carved out of linoleum and was previously editioned as a relief print, printing the raised elements of the matrix. Dzhuraeva here reverses the use of the lines. She forces white ink into the groves which she carved away, and shows us the "valleys" of the matrix, rather than the raised lines. She accentuates the reversed use of the matrix by also reversing paper and ink colors. Instead of using black ink on white paper, as is usual for her (and most artists), she prints white ink on black paper. Olesya Dzhuraeva is not about to stop surprising us!
